Bunny Hopping,Rabbit show jumping, rabbit dressage or rabbit hopping Call it what you will is a competition in which trained domestic rabbits leap over appropriately sized obstacles.
I call it the most amazing feat of Bunny Ability! This amazing sport of Bunny hopping began in the late 1970s in Sweden (where it is known as (Kaninhoppning). It was popularized in the U.K following an appearance on the TV show That's Life (Esther Rantzen has a lot to answer for) as there are more than fifty rabbit show jumping clubs throughout Scandinavia.and an ever increasing number throughout the world, Many titles and awards can be won during events sponsored by groups such as the U.S. Rabbit Agility Association, Rabbithopping USA, the American Association of Sporting Events for Rabbits, 4-H Club fairs, and other venues. Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the United Kingdom hold local and nationally sanctioned events.
International competitions have been difficult to organize as apart from Norway and Sweden who share the same rules other countries have developed different rules for the sport. There are separate competitions for rabbits depending on their size
World Records High Jump for rabbits is 995 millimeters (39.17 in), by Tösen & Tine Hygom (Denmark). The official world record in long jump for rabbits is 3000 millimetres (118.11 in), by Yaboo & Maria Jensen (Denmark). A few Olympic coaches should take note of these bunnies!
All breeds are allowed to participate with the exception of long haired Angora rabbits if they have not been clipped as they must have clear vision and be able to maneuver through the obstacles safely. The English Lop should not be entered into competitions as the length of their ears will cause problems through injury. A good competition rabbit should have long legs, a long body and of course be a good jumper.I find the sport fascinating the heights and distances that even the smallest rabbits achieve are unbelievable unless you witness it with your own eyes.
